BLACK DAWN - CHAPTER ONE - SCENE FIVE
The factory was silent now. Everything was set. Years in the planning and the endgame was finally here. Viktor's finger glided over a set of unrolled blueprints, tracing the lines with idle precision.
“You are ready?” he asked without looking up.
Across from him stood a broad-shouldered man in a black tactical jacket and combats, his arms crossed, his face impassive. "We are," he said with confidence, yet a hesitation lingered in his posture.
"Go on," Viktor said.
“And after?”
“The wheel will stop at the designated time. Your only task is to keep Rand there until Westminster burns. He must see what his curse has brought him.”
"Then what?"
Viktor finally lifted his gaze, steel-grey eyes locking onto him. “Then, you let him go.”
“You’re certain? We have him now, seems a waste not to finish it.”
Viktor’s expression barely shifted, but there was a tightening in the air between them. He stepped around the table, closing the space between them with quiet, deliberate menace.
“Do not mistake patience for mercy,” he said. “Rand is necessary for what comes next. Killing him now would be like cutting the power before the detonation sequence is complete.”
The henchman’s jaw tightened. “And if he resists?”
Viktor exhaled, almost amused. “He will. You can count on that. If he becomes difficult, use as much restraint as you deem necessary. But do not kill him. Just remind him who is in control.” Viktor turned back to the table, his fingers tapping on the map spread before him. “Keep him where he needs to be. When Westminster falls, his purpose will extend beyond this night.” He glanced over his shoulder, his expression sharp, unyielding. “Do not fail me.”
The henchman gave a single nod before melting into the shadows.
Viktor remained, his gaze fixed on the blueprints and on the precise lines and calculations that had led to this moment. It was done. The wheel would stop exactly as intended, and when it did, the world would shift irreversibly.
He allowed himself a small smile.
The dawn was inevitable.
