On This Day In History in 1851, Moby Dick, by Herman Melville, is first published.
But, did you know, it was originally called The Whale. Obviously they thought that was a silly title so changed it to Moby Dick. Much less silly.
On This Day in 1867, the United States of America took possession of Alaska, after buying it from Russia at a knock down price of $7.2 million.
On This Day in 1898, the United States of America took possession of Puerto Rico from Spain.
