On This Day - 8th January

jvcullan.blogspot.co.ukON THIS DAY IN HISTORY - 8th of JANUARY

On This Day, 8th of January, 1941, Lieutenant General Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell, or Sheesh-You've-Got-A-Long-Name to his friends, died.
Baden-Powell is famous for being the founder of the Scout Movement, of which millions of boys, and now girls, are members. So, if girls are allowed in the Cubs and Scouts, how come boys aren't allowed to join the Girl Guides or Brownies? Seems a bit unfair.

When Baden-Powell got married, his wife asked: Why is there a bucket of water beside the bed?

Baden-Powell replied: A young man beset by impure thoughts should drive them away by plunging his "racial organ" into icy water.

His wife looked at the bucket, and then at him, standing all in his nekkid-ness, and whispered, "We're gonna need a bigger bucket."

Also in the news:

On This Day, the 8th of January, 1815, Andrew Jackson, future President of them-there-here-there United States of America, led the American forces to a resounding victory over the British Army at the Battle of New Orleans.

On This Day, the 8th of January, 2005, The USS San Francisco, a nuclear powered submarine, crewed and captained by the very best of the US Navy, collided at full speed into an undersea mountain just south of Guam.

There were many injuries, ninety-eight in total, and one man was killed, but the sub was able to surface and make repairs.

The mountain, on the other hand was completely destroyed by an underwater nuclear explosion. Suspiciously leaving no evidence of the crash.

The Captain of the sub was heard to say, "What crash? What mountain? There was no mountain? These aren't the droids you're looking for."
